About Kvarteret
Kvarteret is the students' culture house in Bergen and your ticket to a better study day!
Kvarteret was opened by Crown Prince Haakon on 22 February 1995. The name "Det Akademiske Kvarter" plays on a tradition that academics had a quarter of an hour over the set time to meet "precisely". In the same tradition, it was previously the case that all times for lectures at Norwegian universities were set a quarter of an hour before the actual lecture. For this reason, you always have an extra 15 minutes to meet friends at Kvarteret.
The student culture house is spread over three floors, houses approximately 2,200 events annually and has, after an extensive renovation between 2007-2010, expanded capacity to 1,500 visitors. The house has several bars and rooms that are used daily for various debates, concerts and events.
Kvarteret is wheelchair accessible and has a lift to all floors of the building.
Volunteering
The house is run by a couple of hundred volunteers who work to make student life in Bergen better.
We are proud to offer a wide range of events annually, a good social work environment and one of Bergen's best atmospheres. To do this, we work closely with a number of organizers, but especially with our operating organizations Active Student Association, Bergen Film Club, Bergen Realist Association, Student Theater Immaturus and the Student Society in Bergen.
As a volunteer at Kvarteret, you get a large social network, good work experience and several internal benefits such as discounts on food and drink and free admission to several events. In addition, you get to take part in various social events, such as parties, Christmas dinners and cabin trips. More information about the different groups can be found at blifrivillig.no
SKiBAS
Kvarteret is run by volunteers for everyday operation, but the property itself is managed as a corporation.
Studentkulturhuset i Bergen AS (SKiBAS) was founded on the 23rd of January, 1995, and has its seat in Bergen. The company manages Olav Kyrres street 49 to be used as a students culture house on behalf of the owners.
Daily management in SKiBAS overlaps with Kvarterstyret, in addition to Kvarterets administrative leader. Ownership of the company is split evenly between Kvarteret itself, Sammen - Studentsamskipnaden på vestlandet and the University of Bergen. Leader of Kvarterstyret is consitutated as CEO of SKiBAS.
SKiBAS is responsible for employment of the few paid positions at Kvarteret. This happens after a selection process by Kvarteret itself. There are only 3 full-time employees at the students culture house. These are the administrative manager, kitchen manager and technical manager. Besides those, there are a handful of part-time positions as operations managers.
